About Artist

Jorinde Voigt (b. 1977, Frankfurt am Main) lives and works in Berlin where she graduated in Visual Culture Studies at the University of the Arts, studying in the master class of Katharina Sieverding. In 2014, she has been appointed Professor for Conceptual Drawing and Painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich. Best-known for large-scale drawings that develop complex notation systems derived from music, philosophy, and phenomenology, Voigt channels external pulse and physical movements into complex drawn notations, featuring webs of interconnected thoughts, forms, and words.

Jorinde Voigt’s work is included in numerous collections, among them are the Art Institute of Chicago, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, and the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin. In 2011, she participated in the 54th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale.

About Artwork

A pure abstract gold-toned map, it is self-contained and suggestive of the artist’s own circular thinking. Like an aerial view of a landscape, and if one looks closely, it could be viewed as a cut-out with potential for a body in the shape of a garden or highway. Voigt calls works like this “cognitive cartographies.” In all of these pieces, in various media, we perceive the shapes of sound and the patterns of its progressions, like algorithms and sound waves—“visual scores.”
