ELMGREEN & DRAGSET
Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) work together as an artist duo since 1995, live and work in Berlin, Germany. Elmgreen & Dragset work at the crossroads of art and architecture, performance, and installation. Focusing on recontextualizing objects and their settings, Elmgreen & Dragset push against the normal modes for the display of art. Whether through sculptures or total environments, their work draws attention to the institutions that host them and their attendant politics. Elmgreen & Dragset’s outdoor public sculptures recontextualize their surroundings, as seen in well-known projects like Van Gogh’s Ear at Rockefeller Plaza in New York or Prada Marfa, located along Highway 90 in the middle of the Texan desert.
Elmgreen & Dragset’s work has been exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Modern, Galerie Perrotin, König Galerie, and Victoria Miro Gallery amongst many others. In 2009, they have curated the Danish and Nordic Pavilions for the 53rd Venice Biennale, and in 2017, they joined the 15th Istanbul Biennial as curators.
