Mike Berg (b. 1948, Oregon) is an artist known for reinterpreting basic geometric forms in his own artistic language, giving them depth and new meanings. He graduated from The University of Washington, Seattle in 1971 and pursued his master's degree at Fort Wright College, Spokane. Later, he continued his education at New York Studio School with a scholarship. Berg's steel wall sculptures create patterns on the surface, emphasizing the material's transformation during the creative process. His works involve turning gouache drawings into woven rugs and calligraphic motifs into metal sculptures. Influenced by the non-narrative, abstract expressions of the East during his time in Turkey, he incorporates elements of their culture and craftsmanship into his art. Based in Istanbul and New York, Berg's solo exhibitions have been held mainly in these cities, including notable venues like Adas (Istanbul, 2018) and Galeri Nev Istanbul (2006-2018). He has also participated in group exhibitions and biennials worldwide, showcasing his works at venues such as the 3rd Mardin Biennial (Mardin, 2014) and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (San Diego, 2012). Collaborating with craft masters, Berg combines modern forms with traditional craftsmanship, offering viewers unlimited potential for interpretation in his works.
