Zümrütoğlu was born in Konya, Turkey in 1970. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir in 1996. Following his graduation from university, he continued his studies in Belgium and Holland where he had the opportunity to further his study of European paintings. His paintings evoke German Expressionism and Physical Abstraction artworks and share their formal approach to subject matter. Moreover, the power and forces expressed through the plasticity of the images as well as the use of colours are the driving sources of the artist’s work. On the one side, his figures are dynamic, dissolving in the materiality of the canvases and reemerging with new shapes. On the other side, his use of chromatic variation and bold brushwork makes the Turkish artist’s work a new perception of tension and irony.
